Charles “Chuck” Edward Smith III, age 49, of Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 14th, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Though his time on earth was far too brief, Chuck’s life was rich in love, service, and unwavering faith.
Born on August 4, 1975, in Portsmouth, Ohio, Chuck was the beloved son of Charles Edward Smith Jr. and the late Laura Jehu-Smith. He graduated from Portsmouth East High School in 1995 and went on to dedicate 19 years of honorable service as a correctional officer at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. A steady and compassionate presence, Chuck served his community with integrity and heart.
On September 13th, 1997, Chuck married the love of his life, Gail Smith. Together, they built a life rooted in love, partnership, and shared purpose — a marriage that spanned nearly 28 years and was a shining example of devotion. Chuck was a proud and deeply involved father to Christopher (Hannah) Smith, Brandon (Susan) Smith, and Katelyn (Jarod) Opperman, and a joyful grandfather to Anna Marie, Elaina June, Carter Michael, and Brynlee Paige.
Chuck had a servant’s heart and a steady, guiding presence. He poured his time and energy into his family and community — serving as scout leader of Troop 23, coaching his children’s athletic teams, and mentoring countless individuals throughout his life. His life was a living testament to quiet strength, humility, and love in action.
He is also survived by his parents, Charles Edward Smith Jr. (Anita Smith), Betty Graham-Smith, and Linda Beekman, as well as his siblings: Deanna (Jim) Webb, Sara Smith, Kennedy Smith, Chenise Smith, and Manny Smith.
Chuck was preceded in death by his birth mother, Laura Jehu-Smith; grandmother, Delores Price; great-grandmother, Mabel Smith; and mother- and father-in-law, Ramona and Ralph Penix.
Chuck was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews: Sammy, Braden, Wyatt, Ryan, Aiden, Adam, Ben, Elayla, and Emmanuel — all of whom held a special place in his heart.
A viewing will be held on Friday, July 18th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the services on Saturday at SWICK BENTLEY FUNERAL HOME, 1104 Harrisonville Ave, New Boston, OH. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, July 19th, at 2:00 PM, followed by a graveside service at Vernon Cemetery in Wheelersburg, Ohio.
Chuck’s legacy is one of faith, loyalty, and love. His presence was a gift, and his memory will be cherished and carried on by all who knew him.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
