Effie Gay Born, 1934 – 2025

Effie Gay Born, our sweet Mimi, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2025, at the age of 91. Richard, Christina, Ricky Bolda, and Katie Shepard held her hand until her last breath, sending her off to the next life to be reunited with her loved ones.

Born on April 28, 1934 in Nolan WV, Effie lived a long and impactful life. Though she was a force to be reckoned with, her love for her family and friends was unmatched. She was known for being sweet and kind and was always ready to have a menthol cigarette or "gossiping" and share a good laugh with anyone who sat down next to her.

Effie was a devoted family woman. She took immense pride in caring for her parents, known affectionately as Granny (Goldie Chaffins Sowkulech) and Grandpa John (John Sowkulech). She loved being around people, which was evident in her work at the Town Bar in New Boston and as a bus aide for Eden Park.

Effie was preceded in death by her parents, John Sowkulech and Goldie Chaffins Sowkulech, and her beloved daughter, Angel Born Lawson.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her surviving family:

• Her loving grandson, Richard Bolda, and granddaughter-in-law, Christina Bolda, of Sciotoville.

• Her granddaughter, Lindsay Brashear, and grandson-in-law, Jonathan Brashear, of Portsmouth.

• Grandson Levi (Angie) Odell of Ashland KY

• Her ex-son-in-law, Richard J. Bolda, of Highlands Ranch, CO.

• Her great-grandchildren, Ricky Lee Bolda of Sciotoville and Christopher (Cyndi) Bolda of Portsmouth. Aiden Hunter of Portsmouth and Destiny and Jaydyn Odell , and Avery Smithers.

• Her great-great-grandchildren, Matthew, Mason, Avah, Janessa, Scarlett, and Amara Bolda.

• Her devoted bonus family members, Alexis Bailey, Rachael Klein, and Katie Shepherd. And her loyal dog Tiki of 14.5 years. He was her little baby she loved and he loved her dearly.

Effie would want us all to remember the good times, laugh at the funny times (of which there were many), and not grieve, knowing she is with her mom, dad, and daughter once again.

A remembrance of life celebration is being planned, and details will be shared with family and friends once finalized.
